Terrain Tactics

Terrain is not decoration

3 Kingdoms Online Remastered (Chinese title 三國鼎立Online Remastered, Steam AppID 4770830) is a free-to-play turn-based tactical MMO by Chinesegamer, released on Steam on 11 August 2026. It is online multiplayer, Steam-only, with Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese UI only (no English interface). Expect 15v15 boards, ten unit types, 27 terrains, remastered portraits, AI auto-battle, nation war, and campaigns such as Hulao Pass, Guandu, Changban Bridge, and Red Cliffs.

Official materials stress 27 terrains, each with different suitability, movement costs, and combat effects. Identical rosters produce different winners when the ground changes. This page teaches habits; the interactive table lives on Terrain Reference.

Questions to ask every deployment

  1. Which tiles slow my cavalry (騎兵)?
  2. Where can infantry (步兵) become immovable?
  3. Which elevated or long corridors buff archers (弓兵)?
  4. Can engineers (工兵) reach the objective without spending two extra turns?
  5. Does my medic (藥師) stand on a tile that invites focus?

The ten unit types are infantry (步兵), cavalry (騎兵), archers (弓兵), light infantry (輕裝兵), strategists (謀士), medics (藥師), engineers (工兵), taoists (道士), songstresses (歌妓), and barbarians (蠻兵).

Campaign case studies

Hulao Pass — punish greedy mounts; reward anchored infantry. Guandu — operational space and layered defense tiles. Changban Bridge — bridge tiles define the entire drama. Red Cliffs — complex interactions; flex comps win. Details in Campaigns.

Nation war case studies

Gates, stairs, and approach roads decide Nation War more than raw portrait score. Defense teams should pre-stack favorable tiles; offense teams should create flanking routes for light infantry (輕裝兵) rather than endlessly headbutting the strongest square.

Custom battlefields

Some modes let organizers alter terrain and rules. Always reopen this checklist when the ground is player-authored. A PvP Builds list tuned for plains can collapse on swampy custom boards.

Habits for English UI users

You may not read every Chinese terrain name at speed. Memorize icon patterns and keep the Terrain Reference tool open. Combine with the Unit Counter Tool so class and tile answers move together.

Training plan

Play one manual session from How to Play where your only goal is correct tile standing. Disable Auto-Battle for that session. Then run Beginner Builds content on two different terrains and note which flex unit swapped.

Economy angle

Internal development on Internal Affairs does not replace tile skill, but it funds the officers who can afford to specialize for awkward maps. Claim launch power via Launch Rewards so you are not forced into one-comp-fits-all poverty.

Master tiles and average officers look brilliant. Ignore tiles and legendary portraits look lost.

Tile literacy drills

Drill one: clear Hulao while naming every tile type your cavalry steps on. Drill two: defend a bridge while never standing your medic on the open bridge square. Drill three: win a wide room while refusing to fight on the enemy’s favored bank. Log which drill fails; that failure is your next guide reread.

Siege cartography

Before nation war, open the city map and mark three words on each approach: slow, open, or elevated. Assign unit types to those words using Unit Types and the counter tool. Share the three-word map with teammates even if the rest of the call is in Chinese—the words travel.

Custom host responsibility

If you host a custom terrain room, announce the gimmick in plain language before ready checks. Hidden swamp tiles are not clever; they are a waste of fifteen players’ time. Good hosts teach terrain; bad hosts farm confusion.
